A hand colored board with a Hnefatafl game on one side and Morris on the reverse inspired by a two-sided game board found in the excavation of the 9th century Gokstad Ship Burial
Made by us here in Minnesota

Our version of a Hnefatafl game using game pieces inspired by a surviving sheep bone game piece found in Oxfordshire, England. "Tafl" games are said to have been played by Norse cultures as early as 400 A.D., and were imported by the Vikings to Iceland, Britain, Ireland, and Wales. They were the primary strategy games in Northern Europe prior to Chess. Unlike Chess, or Checkers which are fought by equal armies from opposite sides of the board, "Tafl" games involve a single king and his defenders in the center of the board surrounded by a larger army of attackers. Our version is inspired by an unusual fragment of a game board found with the the 9th century Gokstad Ship Burial discovered in Norway. The board fragment appeared to have a 13 x 13 grid. Traditionally, surviving boards are fairly plain, but to make it easier to set up we have identified the starting layout with simple knotwork designs. The boards are about 3/4" thick and 16-inches square. We also include facsimile sheep knucklebones as an option for playing "Tawlbwrdd" a Welsh variation which may have used dice.

There is an unconfirmed legend that Captain Cook played this ancestor to the modern game of Connect Four™ to relax below deck with his fellow officers during his voyages. The story claims that he spent so much time playing the game, that it came to be known as "The Captain's Mistress." The object of the game is simple, players try to be the first to line up four of their wooden balls in a row, horizontally, vertically or diagonally. At game's end, pull the "gangplank" and the hardwood balls drop back into the box. 7 5/8" x 5 1/4" x 2 1/8"

A hand-colored board with a circular "Byzantine" Chess game on one side, and on the other side is a combination a standard Chess board and Tablut game played on the lines of the board.

Tablut belongs to the family of Scandinavian "Tafl" games. These were popular games in Northern Europe prior to the introduction of Chess. The defenders win if the king escapes to the edge of the board, and the attackers win by surrounding the king before he escapes. Includes Isle of Lewis Chess pieces with additional white pawns included for playing Tablut.

In addition to the Chess pieces we include two variations in rules for circular Chess, rules for Tablut, a set of wooden Checkers, and our booklet of Checkers rule variation. The board is 14 inches square. Colors of the game boards may vary slightly from those pictured

This is considered a competition "sprint style" board with 60 holes straight up and 60 holes back and a simple Celtic knot engraved down the center. In an effort to standardize the cribbage board, the American Cribbage Congress (ACC) recommends a standard board that is 60 holes long to decrease pegging errors and to help improve tournaments. It measures 16" x 3.75"

It includes metal pegs stored in a hole in the back, and of course comes with our booklet of 15 variations on Cribbage games.
