Dominoes seem to have been played in China since about 1120 A.D. but do not seem to have become common in Europe until the early 1700’s, first in Italy, after which they seem to have quickly spread throughout Europe. Early sets were frequently made in two layers: white bone, or ivory with the “pips” or spots drilled through the bone to expose the ebony, or black-stained bone through the holes. The Academie Francaise accepted the name “dominos” in 1798, but the origin of the name is subject to speculation. Some scholars believe that it comes form the word for a hooded cape once worn by priests, which was black, with a white lining.
