I am in the process of developing my own line of hand-made canes and walking sticks turned on my lathe. As I get more practice I plan to also make some "gadget" canes with hidden features such as flasks, (maybe an mp3 player & earphones??), items for self defence etc. I'm making "Green" canes. -Except for occasional exotic woods, most of the material I am using is "recycled" wood that is purchased from a local non-profit company that salvages used or surplus material and fixtures from home remodeling projects. Two of my first proto-types. The left-hand example is a maple shaft "japanned" (painted gloss black to simulate ebony, or lacquer) with a copper collar and a brass knob. The right-hand example has a solid oak shaft with a copper collar and an ebony head. | ![]() |

Naughty Nutsuke Cane
A reproduction of a slightly naughty Japanese netsuke figure carved to look like a man's head with his features made up of women's bodies. It is cast in ivory-colored resin and fitted as the handle of an oak walking stick. |

New! This is a collection of the various illustrations on early turning that I have found over the last ten years and is intended to assist others who are interested in experimenting with these machines of the past. My interest has been in pre-industrialized turning, so there is little here about the commercially manufactured lathes, and nothing about modern motorized turning. Included on the disk: All 86 plates from Denis Diderot's L'art du Tourneur (1775) Selected plates from Charles Plumier's D'art de Tourner (1706) All turning-related plates from from Joseph Moxon's Mechanick Exercises (1678) Dozens of other illustrations I have collected, as well as notes that I have made on the history of turning from various primary and secondary sources. Simple plans for two of the lathes I have built and experimented with. Mac and Windows compatable. | |
